Teaching English as a Second Language | Certification
SEBTS now offers a certification in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
Do you have a desire to reach the nations with the gospel through teaching English? The College at Southeastern is now offering a way for college and seminary students to receive training through the Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).
What is TESL?
The TESL Certificate provides students with the basic requirements needed to teach English cross-culturally overseas or institutionally, including in community colleges and private schools within the United States. TESL is separate from any other degree programs and certificates offered at Southeastern and is not the same as the ESL license that public schools require of teachers. However, TESL Certificate credits earned at Southeastern can be transferred to another institution for students who desire to receive ESL Teacher Licensure. This certification offered at Southeastern meets the certificate program standards laid out by TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages). Any student enrolled in any degree program (undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate) are able to take these courses.
What classes are required to complete the TESL Certificate?
This online-only certification can take a minimum of one year to complete, with two classes offered in the fall and two classes offered in the spring, beginning this semester (Fall 2018). The 12 hours of classes required to complete the TESL Certificate include:
ENG 4810 Second Language Acquisition (Offered every fall semester)
ENG 4820 English Grammar (Offered every spring semester)
ENG 4830 ESL Teaching Methods (Offered every fall semester)
ENG 4850 TESL Internship (Offered every spring semester)
Why is Southeastern offering this certification?
Our hope at Southeastern is that the gospel would be the fuel that drives each and every student to fulfill the Great Commission. The TESL Certificate is one way that students can be further equipped to make the gospel known among every nation, tribe and tongue.
